RAINN(Rape Abuse and Incest National Network) is a nonprofit, anti-sexual violence organization founded in 1994. The organization has over three million supporters and offers extensive support for victims of sexual violence. RAINN also provides educational programs and training for treating victims, including the organization’s 24-hour hotline.
RAINN held a press conference to announce a new initiative that has been in the works for some time: RAINN will now allow donors to make online donations through PayPal. In addition to reducing costs, this new initiative will eventually increase transparency within RAINN and provide greater accountability regarding the money made by their contributions.
RAINN’s president, Scott Berkowitz, explained that the organization’s research group has worked on this program for nearly a year. Mr. Berkowitz and RAINN board member Kimberly Lonsway hosted the press conference. RAINN is ranked as the first or second most popular charity by eight online fundraising platforms. In 2000 and 2001, RAINN was named the largest anti-sexual violence organization in terms of donations and volunteers.
RainN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. They combine groundbreaking work on behalf of victims with advocacy for a more robust criminal justice system and provide sustainable support to communities until sexual violence is no longer a problem.
RAINN is turning its sights on the need for practical prevention efforts. RAINN has launched an unprecedented public awareness campaign to make it clear that teens and adults alike can act to prevent sexual assault before it happens – through messages, resources, social media outreach, ads, and more. RAINN is also launching RainStories, a video series featuring survivors sharing their experiences in hopes of changing the culture of rape.
RainN has operated since 1993 and is the product of a former activist named Mary Smith. The founders designed the program to meet survivors where they were and to help change their world. They soon realized that even best efforts would not stop sexual violence if society didn’t address it, so RAINN began contributing to that end. LEARN MORE
